Diptyque vidéographique, captation 1 & 2

2011

Excerpt

This diptyque compares two videos in which a young man and the artist, at the centre of each image, take on the same gestures.

In the first one, Judith Deschamps filmed a student during a weekly class at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin. In the second one, she reenacted his gestures identically. To do so, she learned all of his movements by heart, and asked the artist Diane Augier to memorise hers when she was filming.

This performative work focuses on a fragment of everyday life in art school, emphasising the micro-gestures that make up this ordinary moment. The choreography that emerges attempts to generate what Freud defined as the Unheimlich, a sense of unsettling strangeness.
